Over this website, students will meet the outcomes of the NSW Science and Technology K–6 Syllabus (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2017) by exploring how the Earth and Sun cause regular changes such as day and night (ST2-10ES-S). They will develop their scientific inquiry skills by planning, conducting investigations, and communicating their findings through quizzes and observation activities (ST2-1WS-S). Additionally, students will engage in design and production tasks by creating digital models and drawings using tools like Google Drawings and Canva to demonstrate their understanding (ST2-2DP-T). This learning also integrates cross-curricular skills in English, Visual Arts, and Geography, alongside developing capabilities in critical and creative thinking, ICT, and literacy (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2013).
Welcome,
Have you ever wondered why the sun rises and sets? Why it’s daytime in Australia but nighttime in other countries?
In this adventure, you will discover how the Earth’s movements cause day and night. You will investigate real-world data, create your own diagrams and videos, and share your thinking like real scientists!
What really makes day and night, is it the Sun moving, or the Earth spinning?
Learning Intention:
Learning to explain how Earth’s rotation causes day and night.
Success Criteria:
Students will be able to:
Describe the rotation of Earth and how it causes day and night.
Label a diagram correctly showing day and night.
Use appropriate scientific vocabulary (e.g. rotate, axis, sunlight, shadow).
Respond to a short quiz.
