Amid the final weekend of May, two Woodstock High School students will embark on an unforgettable adventure to Ottawa. Known as "Adventures in Citizenship," this enlightening journey, generously sponsored by Rotary clubs across Canada promises to be a transformative experience.
Ainslie MacInnis and Brooke Schriver applied for the program through the Rotary Interact Club at WHS. They received news of their acceptance in early April.
For MacInnis and Schriver, this journey is a reflection of their dedication and generosity. Both are actively involved in Rotary Interact and Student Leadership, where they have worked hard alongside their fellow club members to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment at WHS. Their commitment to service and community has not gone unnoticed, and this trip serves as recognition of their hard work.
The "Adventures and Citizenship" program offers a diverse array of activities designed to inspire and educate. Participants of the program will be engaging in workshops, discussions, and team-building exercises, all aimed at enhancing their leadership skills and understanding of civic responsibility. They will also have the chance to explore Ottawa’s rich history and vibrant culture, visiting landmarks such as Parliament Hill and the National Gallery of Canada.
Since its inauguration in 1951, this program has been a cornerstone of Rotary Interact, providing young leaders with unique opportunities to grow and connect. After several years of virtual participation due to the pandemic, this trip marks the second year since the pandemic, that students can once again enjoy the program in person.
“After receiving my acceptance into the Adventures in Citizenship program I immediately felt excited to be a part of such an amazing experience and to meet fellow students from across the country,'' says Brooke Schriver, a grade 12 WHS Interact member chosen for the trip. For Schriver, the chance to build connections with fellow student leaders is one of the many aspects of the program she eagerly anticipates.
The trip is scheduled from May 25-29, with the program officially kicking off on Sunday, May 26. During their stay, the students will be housed in the dormitories at the University of Ottawa, alongside 170 other young leaders from across the nation.
This adventure not only represents a significant personal achievement for MacInnis and Schriver but also highlights the ongoing commitment of Rotary to nurture the next generation of leaders. As they prepare to take to the skies, the students are sure to gain invaluable experiences and forge lasting connections that will shape a future generation of leaders.
