A Review on Where the Crawdads Sing
Film | 03 May 2024 | Rylee Kitchen
Delia Owens’ debut novel Where the Crawdads Sing was a hit for many and claimed the title of a #1 New York Times Bestseller in 2018 with over 22 million copies sold today. Just four years later in 2022, the worldwide sensation was brought to screens and continues to be enjoyed by everyone.
Where the Crawdads Sing is now currently #2 of the top 10 most searched thriller movie streaming today and for a good reason.
Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, and Harris Dickinson, the film set in 1952 to 1970 was perfectly captured by director Olivia Newman and tells an amazing story of young Kya.
This story was brought to life in a captivating and suspenseful way that leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat the whole movie.
Abandoned as a child Kya raises herself in the dangerous and lonely marshlands of North Carolina. Rumors of “the marsh girl” quickly form in the nearby towns and Kya finds herself feeling like an outsider, despite growing up in the area her whole life.
Not all hope is lost when Kya finds a friend in a young boy, Tate Walker. Tate quickly leads into a more romantic relationship between the two. Yet when Tate has to leave for college, Kya finds herself alone once again and feeling betrayed that Tate was another person who abandoned her.
Shortly after, Kya finds herself a new friend, Chase Andrews. However, when Chase is found dead, Kya immediately becomes the main suspect. As the film continues and the case unfolds it becomes increasingly unclear who the perpetrator is, and we’re left with the feeling of wanting to see the whole picture.
It is no doubt how the book became so popular by its readers, and why the film is earning similar attention. The characters and the story kept me begging for more details. Not only was Daisy Edger-Jones able to portray the role of Kya perfectly, but she was also filled with pure emotion as if she truly felt Kya’s emotions coursing through her veins. The raw emotions really shone through in Kya and made me feel a sense of anger or happiness whenever Kya herself did.
Where the Crawdads Sing tied me in at the very beginning and was able to capture me so much; I felt attached to the characters. The ending was just as perfect as the beginning, and I truly felt relieved for the characters and what they were able to overcome.
Where the Crawdads Sing is a film with strong female independence filled with mystery, romance, and trauma that is perfect for watching if you’re in the mood for a coming-of-age murder mystery with a good plot twist that leaves you replaying the events in your head for days to come.

Subnautica Below Zero: Below Expectations from its Predecessor?
Incredible atmosphere paired with terrible glitches leave the review scale tottering
Review – 19 April 2024 – Aidan Jackson
A render of a Shadow Leviathan (Provided by Unknown Worlds Ent.).
2018 was a game-changer for the survival videogame franchise when the first Subnautica game finally reached the surface. This is not the game we are reviewing, but it is important you know this for context as it is the prequel.
Unknown Worlds took creative liberty in designing a survival experience that took place on an aquatic planet, an environment that forces the player to leave the human comforts of dry-land and dive into the deep underwater, should they have a shot at surviving. Because of this feature, 3D graphic designers and gaffers had an incredible heap of situational lighting effects available at their disposal due to their game being based underwater. As a result, Subnautica was given an incredible, uniquely beautiful, and terrifying at times atmosphere with mystic lighting effects and stellar immersion (especially on an ultra-wide-screen monitor).
They took it further by adding unique survival gameplay that was profoundly addictive and always had you on your toes to explore the next biome. During that exploration, the player often operates sea vehicles, one of which is a massive, mobile HQ submarine called the Cyclops, debatably the coolest feature in the whole game. All through the experience, you will be tasked with avoiding undefeatable leviathan predators that will hunt you down should you dare trespass their territory.
Anyone who played the first game will recall its funny dialogue given by recording of found media on PDAs scattered across the map, and voice lines from your own PDA assistant, and your vehicle’s AI. Each one had a different voice, with so much personality and uniqueness everywhere; other than the occasional visual glitch, this game was a masterpiece in creativity. So, where did things go south in the less-enjoyed sequel?
Now – don’t get me wrong – Subnautica Below Zero is definitely a welcome addition to the Subnautica universe, as its game adds more depth to the world Unknown Worlds Studios is building for us to explore.
Subnautica Below Zero shares most of its basic creative ideas with the prequel, which involves crash-landing on the aquatic Planet-4546B. This time, instead of exploring the 2km2 volcanic crater of the first game, we are popped into an artic region of the same size with a new feature: surface exploration. This feature was met with mixed reviews: Some players loved the expansion of the game universe to the surface, adding new alien life and lore to the story. Others disliked it, arguing that it took away from Subnautica’s main gimmick: underwater survival. Those on the opposition would have preferred more underwater areas to explore than this new surface level. Do note, the first game did have two islands in it, but they were very small locations. This new surface is vast and acts more like a mainland rather than an island. Regardless of the land expansion, I personally feel it did not take away from the performance of the underwater world-building, which introduced us new underwater alien worlds to explore, while returning some classic biomes with a fresh, revamped coat of paint.
When looking online, the voice that damns the studio for focusing more on the surface than the underwater is not what concerns me. I have three main points that I feel hindered Subnautica Below Zero’s threshold of success.
First off, the creative writers decide to move away from the “silent protagonist” model (a model in which you, the player’s character, are silent for the whole game), and move towards a protagonist with dialogue. There are lots of games that do this right, but in order for it to work, you need to have very good writers to flesh out a personality without making it feel generic or sanitized. Furthermore, you need to make sure the protagonist does not speak too much, which can take focus away from gameplay. I would say Robin, the protagonist of Subnautica Below Zero, handles this well enough, except for some dialogue that I found was filler at best. (“Nice! I got a scanner!” We get it. So did Riley from the first). To wrap up this point, a game’s horror scenarios are less terrifying with a speaking protagonist; a silent protagonist maintains videogame immersion by making you feel like the protagonist.
Second off – and I was mortified by this – the Cyclops is gone! My absolute favorite part of the first game is gone! Instead, the developers introduced a new type of portable-base vehicle called the Seatruck, a vehicle that while cool, does not match the same caliber as the Cyclops. Its customization factor is far lower than that of the Cyclops, replacing modules added from the builder tool and restricting the customization to prefab-only modules. It’s a little sad and anti-climatic; I just want my Cyclops backs. Why is it gone?
Thirdly – the glitches. Subnautica being a fairly large game developed by a small studio, that title was prone to glitches and certainly had them from time to time, but not terribly bad. Below Zero’s glitches were noticeably larger. Let me give you an example of something that really annoyed me: They recycled Riley’s body animations from the first game over to Robin’s animations. Robin, being a differently shaped character model than Riley, experiences a lot of unnecessary clipping in her animations as a result. I understand studios have limited time to work and that cuts have to be made, but these animations are so critical to the immersion of the player that tanking these can make or break a game’s general sense of polish. Unfortunately, in Below Zero, we don’t get that polish we were looking for.
If you can look past the formerly mentioned issues Below Zero is still definitely worth experiencing, especially with one of its best features yet: A better light engine that makes light react better with other surfaces such as the sea floor, plants, buildings, and fish. That is one redeeming quality this game has: it’s sheer, raw graphical beauty. Everything is so vibrant and shiny! Gotta love that, of course. Nevertheless, I always side for competent animations and hitbox detection over crazy graphics, as do many gamers.
If you have never played an entry in the Subnautica series, I recommend playing the first title before Below Zero. Not only will you understand more about what is happening in the sequel, but you will also understand the appreciation people had for this timeless classic. Subnautica pulls a weird one on its fan base by making the prequel better than the sequel, not to say both games aren’t good, but Below Zero is just missing some things that made Subnautica the immersive legend it was, such as the silent protagonist, the Cyclops, and other development choices. You will have fun playing both but do yourself a favor and play Subnautica One first, you’ll thank me later!

Harlen Brews is a small coffee shop in downtown Woodstock located where Solstice recently closed down. Before they moved to that location, they were to the left of NB Sushi on the side street.
Harlen Brews is very different than the other coffee shops here like Tim Hortons or Country Style because it is local, they are educated baristas, and they don’t use coffee from a plastic bag. Instead, they use actual coffee beans and presses which makes their coffee stand out from the other coffee places here.
They also have good pastries, sandwiches and sweets which are all made in-store so it is not 2 months old and processed. On their menu, they have regular coffee and espresso. They also have a few iced options for hot and sunny days. Yet, what makes their menu special is their other cold drinks and smoothies. One of their cold drinks is Red Bull lemonade and you get to choose what Red Bull is used. Their smoothies are also extraordinary because of their choices; they have smoothies called PB & J, Green Godess and more.
They make their coffee shop look appealing which is important because it makes people want to stay in the coffee shop and enjoy their drink of choice. The modern look they went for made it look amazing.
I don’t have anything negative to say about Harlen Brews except for their hours. I wish they were longer. I would highly recommend you try this coffee shop if you're passing by it, or you just want a good tasting drink that differs from your usually old Double-Double from McDonald’s or Tim Hortons.

A Family Run Business Allows You to Feel a Part of Their Family
A small business offers great customer satisfaction.

The Hilltop Market in a small New Brunswick town, Woodstock, prioritizes their customer’s satisfaction. The Market has three businesses within it: Hilltop Butchery, Sweet Spot Bake Shop and Hilltop Market. Hillcrest Nursery is also there seasonally.
The Hilltop Butchery specializes in selling their customers quality meat and premade meals. Fine cuts of meat bring in people. The meals that are sold are made so customers feel like they are eating a home-cooked meal. The chef takes the responsibility of making sure the customer is satisfied very strongly.
The Sweet Spot Bake Shop uses recipes that have been in the family for many years. The baked goods are one of a kind that cannot be beat anywhere. You can taste the quality and time that was put into the items the moment the sugary goodness reaches your tongue.
They bake their bread fresh every morning throughout the week, meaning it is likely still warm when you are purchasing it. Donuts are baked daily as well and are one of their fastest-selling items.
The baked beans and potato salad are famous throughout the market. Customers become extremely excited when they see the two items in the fridges. Both allow customers to taste two recipes that have likely been in their family before.
The Hilltop Market is not only the name for the entire market, but it's also the business that specializes in selling the produce and local products. The potatoes that come from their farm are rich in flavour and the freshly grown tomatoes when in season are plump and juicy, the taste enlightening your tastebuds. Jams and jellies make up a portion of what is sold as well, the flavours unlike any other. The market also features the products of local businesses varying from maple syrup to hand-knitted pieces.
The next time you are taking a trip to Woodstock, stopping into this little family market, will not be a mistake.

Among Us Game Review
Trying to survive the imposter or not get caught being the imposter
Bailie Brown
Among Us is a game that came out in 2018 and still has millions of users that continue to play it to this day. The game originated on June 15th, 2018, in the United States of America. I personally started playing this game during 2022 because that is when the game became popular. My friends and I were always playing this game at lunch, and it was a blast.
Among Us has many different roles that you can get. There is the Imposter, Shapeshifter, Crewmate, Engineer, Scientist, and a Guardian angel. When you are playing the game the game leader can control how many imposters, and the speed of what you walk. The maximum speed you can set it to is 3.0x and the minimum speed is 0.5x. This game is about survival when you must try and vote out the imposters or complete all the tasks, while the imposter(s) must try and kill the crewmates without getting caught.
When going online you will have some people that are writing inappropriate things in the chat bar and calling people out for things they do not do. I wish that there were more colour options, and that more than 15 people can play in a game at a time because sometimes you might want to play with your class and there is more than 15 people in the class. If you are someone who likes completing tasks to win and sabotage people than this game is for you so, try it out on the App Store today.

A Lookback on Skylanders Trap Team
By Logan Acheson
Skylanders was one of the best selling video game series of the 2010s.
Skylanders was an action/adventure game developed by Toys for Bob and Vicarious Visions.
It was most known for its core selling factor: Toys to Life.
Toys to Life was a video game genre where you would place a plastic figure, embedded with an NFC (near field communication) chip on a base that reads your figure and puts them in the game.
Skylanders: Trap Team was the fourth installment in the series. I personally, also consider it the best. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The game play was pretty standard, you traverse through the levels, collect treasure, beat a few bosses BUT this game featured one of the best gimmicks in gaming - trapping and playing the bosses.
This added a whole new spice to the game and made the bosses more memorable and important.
Not to mention, this game featured the best bosses in the series.
I have some gripes with this game, particularly the publisher. Upping the price of figures in stores, and locking all the past figures out of “Elemental Gates” are a few examples, but overall I don’t truly mind.
I would recommend this but it’s a bit hard to find it second hand locally. If you don’t mind eBay though, this is a phenomenal game. 9/10 rating
Skylanders Trap Team is available for PS3, PS4 (and PS5 through backwards compatibility) - Xbox 360, One (and Series, also through backwards compatibility) - Wii, Wii U, 3DS and formerly tablets.
an opinion piece by Aidan Jackson
I would like to open this controversial opinion piece with the following analogy… see how you can apply it to your own life: when you listen to music, why do you do so? Is it because you enjoy the song? The style? The genre? The lyrics or the instrumentals? With those factors in play, do you care if that person you really like happens to be of a different racial descent than you? I mean, that shouldn’t matter if it’s a good song. Besides, liking a song and then disliking it after discovering the artist of the song is of a different racial descent is unmistakably a racist act. While it is good to sample all sorts of music, including that of the protected minorities no doubt, have you ever felt as a representative of either yourself, or an organization, to pretend that you like what you are listening to, because the zeitgeist which surrounds you implicitly demands you like that music, or risk social damnation - including radical accusations of cultural insensitivity or un-inclusivity? Observe how a well-known comedian turned philosopher with utter un-expectancy at the end of one of his comedy shows, says the following:
Another theme of the show has been “words change, and I’m woke, ha-ha.” But there’s the irony. I think that I am woke, but I think that word has changed. I think if woke still means what it used to mean, that [Caucasians are] aware of [their] own privilege, you try to maximize equality, minimize oppression, be anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic… Yes, I’m definitely woke. If woke now means being a puritanical, authoritarian bully, who gets people fired for an honest opinion or even a fact, then, no, I’m not woke. F*** that (Ricky Gervais: Armageddon).
It is incredible what is happening in today’s society: We are pushing so hard for a fundamental social change, that the change’s motive is gaining a reverse momentum! It’s like when I’m watching a wheel spin so fast on a car I’m seeing double, and it looks like the car’s wheel is spinning backward.
In Canada, positive discrimination can be seen from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Positive discrimination is when social justice for cultural minorities goes beyond affirmation and equity and turns into superiority and diversity’s factor being inequal to a reasonable skill expectation in the workforce. If that sounds like a mouth load, it is. This is an extremely complicated issue that parties of interest must approach with the utmost caution and sensitivity, or risk wording a statement incorrectly, which could lead to an accusation of racism.
As obvious as this might sound, the party that speaks to the acknowledgement of positive discrimination does not possess racist motive. I implore you, we want what all “woke” Canadians and world citizens want, this I guarantee: equality of all people and a level playing ground for all regardless of racial or gender-related factors. As our leaders and great thinkers have proposed and put into action, part of this may be small things such as ensuring there is ample access to makeup for black men and women in the makeup aisle, ensuring that they can have their choice in makeup without having to use a product intended for white skin which will not complement with their skin tone.
This may also include major changes such as launching a federal project to ensure all First Nation reserves across the country have drinking water equal in quality to the universal drinking water standards observed by the WHO and Canada.
An action such as making sure reserves receive this drinking water without delay or excuse whilst keeping it in ample repair is critical to establishing equality within Canada. Yet, when do our actions for equity become positive discrimination?
Let us travel to the hospital… A person lies on a gurney whom after triage requires an emergency, invasive heart surgery. If he does not receive the surgery, or the surgery is executed wrong, he will die. In this situation, would you want the best doctor available for this incredibly difficult procedure, or a diversity hire? What are the implicit consequences of diversity hires?
Chronic health patients medically supervised by diversity hires instead of skill hire are more likely to pass away while combatting their condition. Hiring the worse doctor than the better doctor because of skintone or race is racism in itself. The very definition of discrimination is special treatment of a unique party, whether that be positive or negative. We do not want this happening in healthcare, nor do we want it happening in other critical security roles such as policing, governmental administration, members of the military, and more. We do not want race to be a defining factor of skill due to its independence as different variables. And to be frank, it is rather insulting to a person of color to hire them on the sole basis of their race! It’s mega-offensive and needs to come to an end by adopting honesty in ability judgement unaffected by race. That is what the Charter compels us to do, after all.
Canada had and still has a rough record in the racism department. There is no doubt that addressing such social justice issues requires the utmost scrutiny and thoughtfulness. Nevertheless, we must remember why we all came here: for the equality of the citizen. Negative discrimination cannot be the only partition of the multi-faceted issue our politicians are fighting for today. Omission is considered as a form of lying in a court of law, so let’s speak only the truth: this unfair affirmation must come to an end, for it is only regressing what we have fought over so hard these past few decades: True equality and equity.
A quick disclaimer: as a languages ages, definitions tend to change as society morphs and re-shapes how it interprets said language and the world. English is not immune to this.
