MA, Music Education
Guitar Program Director
Whitney M Young Magnet High School, Chicago
Mr. Peek enrolled at the University of North Texas for three semesters to study with Jack Peterson, then completing his BA in Music at Northern Illinois University. He enrolled in DePaul University in the Fall of 1996 to pursue an additional BA in Music Education. Then in 2008, after ten years of classroom experience he was awarded an MA in Music Education (Honors with Distinction) from DePaul University. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.
Mr. Peek’s thesis project at DePaul focused on the use of the popular music genre in education. At that time, research examining the use of Rock/Pop & Blues music as a valid curricular subject was just beginning to be published. Being thoroughly trained only in traditional music subjects and pedagogy this proved to be an eye-opening experience which served as a catalyst for Jeff’s passion to use these contemporary genres at Whitney Young to engage high school music students by teaching them the music they come in wanting to play. He has also written a set of books based on the unique guitar curriculum he developed for his students. He has presented at the Illinois Music Educators Conference, and receives offers to present around the country.
