Despite negative publicity, thousands of fans seemed enthralled and stunned by the sheer magnitude of the Whitney Houston show at Green Point Stadium this week.

There was a Disney-like firework extravaganza featuring gold, heart-shaped fountains of light and rainbow-coloured firework fountains. There was also a light-show like never seen here before.

And then there was the star herself - made larger than life by huge video screens on either side of the stage- pouting, swaying, pointing, weeping and thrilling the fans.

Clutching a hankle the size of a small table cloth, the star was often moved to tears by the sheer sentimentality of her act. And the adoring fans wept with her.

Houston's voice failed her at times, but she was supported by her blues-singer mother Cissy, and husband Bobby Brown-both great singers in their own right.

Big Concerts promoter, Mr. Roddy Quin, said despite some bad publicity the concerts had been a success.

"There were 75,000 people at the Johannesburg concert. It was the biggest ever to be held in Africa.

"Never before have we had such a huge, mixed crowd in South Africa, and I certainly think it was a success."
