In 2016 the Norfolk and Suffolk Trust was the first in England to be placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for mental health services. It was reported the trust was 'not a safe...service'. These measures continue today with consistent 'inadequate' ratings for the service.
There is no NHS funded programme for addiction recovery in Norfolk.
Lack of funding and resources for mental health has a cascading effect. From decreased morale in doctors and nurses, to insufficient training for those expected to handle mental health cases in GP practises and A&E. This results in not only lack of care, but lack of quality in care for those vulnerable individuals seeking help in a mental health crisis.
Waiting lists for adult mental health care through NHS services in Norfolk are several months long, with ineffective communication, shortage of staff and insufficient funds meaning individuals are often left to fend for themselves while on the waiting list. This includes people with serious mental health issues that pose a threat to their life and personal safety.

We conducted a survey of the Norwich community online over two weeks. Out of almost fifty responses we saw that while individuals have high praise for NHS staff, the speed of service and communication levels were incredibly damaging.
While We Wait is a film about waiting lists, but it is not a film against the NHS. The NHS is a vital part of UK health care, and those who work for it are real life heroes. Our hope is that by raising awareness of this issue, we can bring more support and funding to the NHS service itself.
