Art Honor Society
"Art With Purpose"
In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the NAHS program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. NAEA is a professional organization for art teachers, college and university art personnel, art supervisors, museum art educators, and others concerned with the quality of education in the visual arts.
By becoming a member of the WHHS National Art Honor Society, Students:
gain peer recognition, leadership growth opportunities, college and career preparation, and an unmatched sense of camaraderie
are eligible to apply for the Rising Stars Secondary Recognition Program Award (NAHS Juniors and Seniors only)
are eligible to apply for the Charles M. Robertson Memorial Scholarship and scholarships to Columbus College of Art and Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, and The Art Institute (NAHS Seniors only)
have the opportunity to be published in NAHS News (the semi-annual, full-color digital publication of the NAHS program). Artwork submitted for inclusion is often used in other NAEA publications
are eligible to submit artwork for possible inclusion in the annual NAHS/NJAHS Juried Exhibition held at the NAEA Studio & Gallery
WHHS Chapter of NAHS
NAHS members are eligible for scholarships and special recognition and awards. Honor cords are available to distinguish the NAHS seniors at graduation.
Active Membership in the WHHS Chapter of the Art Honors Society is based on the following criteria:
Students must have successfully completed Visual Arts Comprehensive I or the Carnegie equivalent.
Members must be currently enrolled in an art class in order for membership to remain active.
Members are expected to attend monthly meetings and actively participate in NAHS service activities.
National standards require that all Members of the NAHS must be successfully passing all classes (cumulative GPA of 70 / 2.0 or higher) and maintain an art average of 80 (B) or higher.
Students must complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service per year.
Students must pay the $30.00 yearly dues to maintain membership.
WHHS Art Honors Executive Council
WHHS NAHS Executive Council membership is based on the following criteria:
Members must have served as active members of NAHS in good standing the previous year.
Members must qualify for induction in to the National Art Honor Society each year.
Members are expected to attend every Executive Council meeting.
Members are expected to be actively involved in all chapter sponsored activities.
Members are expected to maintain requirements for active membership in WHHS NAHS.
Officers will preferably be returning members of the Executive Council.
Officers must be able to delegate duties and help bring membership together
NAHS Officers:
President: (aided by Scholarship Chair)
Priority - Conducts club and officer meetings and oversees the chapter
The president will work closely with the Vice President and the Adviser
The president co-chairs monthly executive council meetings with the advisors
Runs club meetings once a month
Provides leadership and develops strategies for strengthening membership
Initiates activities and programs and new ideas to promote NAHS.
Vice President: (aided by Celebration Chair)
Priority - Plans and organizes Induction Ceremony and Banquet in Fall; Art Show and Awards Ceremony in Spring
The Vice President will work closely with the President and Secretary
It is the responsibility of the vice president to write and submit club reports to NAEA
In the absence of the president, the vice president assumes all responsibilities and may be required to facilitate meetings
Secretary: (aided by Membership Chair)
Priority - Handles the bookkeeping, maintains the calendar, and records all attendance for the organization
The secretary will work closely with the Advisors
The secretary's job is to maintain up to date records for the organization, including membership
Keep members informed about their active standing
Keep and help update meeting notes
Notify members of forthcoming meetings, events, and general correspondence
Parliamentarian/Historian: (aided by Education Chair)
Priority - Attend and document events, and update all social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
Communicate the success of our members to school administration
Promote communication of the organization
Committee Chairs:
Scholarship Chair - Works with President
Maintain lists of art shows and competition opportunities
Promote and educate members regarding scholarship opportunities
Celebration Chair - Works with Vice President
Help plan and oversee celebrations of membership (Induction, Holiday party,
Awards banquet)
Membership Chair - Works with Secretary
Plan and oversee events, activities and membership drives
Community Outreach - Works with Historian/Parliamentarian
Plan and oversee outreach programs and events (ie; SpARTan Camp, Carnegie Collaboration)
Member(s) at large
Represent the whole membership and assist each subset of the executive council as needed.
