About Us

The Western Steam Fiends Association (WSFA), Incorporated, was started in Colton, Washington in 1952. The founders of the organization had a true passion for the steam traction engines and steam machinery.

In 1952, Harvey Mikkelson, a founding member, hosted the first WSFA Threshing Bee on his property in Silverton, Oregon. Harvey went on to host a total of eleven threshing bee's up through 1966. Over time, the show had become a very large event and many hands involved. In 1970, members of the WSFA helped purchase the property Antique Powerland, now known as Powerland Heritage Park, to have a permanent how to host their threshing bee's and farm fair now known as The Great Oregon Steam-up.

The Western Steam Fiends Association, Incorporated, is incorporated in the State of Oregon and holds a 501(c)3 non-profit status with the IRS. WSFA is also part of Branch #230 of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association (EDGETA).

Our group is dedicated to the preservation of antique steam powered equipment. Members participate in the restoration and operation of a wide variety of steam powered machines. Activities include; the Great Oregon Steam-up, participation in offsite regional agriculture and heritage shows and festivals including the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, the Northwest Ag Show, and the Willamette Valley Ag show.

WSFA also hosts an annual educational series of classes called "Steam School" which starts in the month of January and runs through May. Steam school teaches interested individuals the theory of operation, safe operating practices, and hands-on experience on how to properly run and maintain steam operated equipment.
