The Allegany Museum is located in the 1932 Art Deco Governor William Donald Schaefer Building at 3 Pershing Street in downtown Cumberland.
Allegany Museum Incorporated, a private nonprofit organization, purchased the property from the County in 1999. When the occupant of the second floor, the Maryland District Court, moved to their new facility in 2009, the museum began extensive restoration of the building and the transfer of thousands of artifacts. With the increase of floor space, new exhibits were added to enhance the museum’s goal to reflect the history and culture of the people of the Western Maryland region.
Of special interest to the Chapter was the unveiling of a new exhibit on the BartonVillage Site. An eight foot long glass case illustrates the archeological work conducted by Dr. Robert Wall over the past twenty years.
The display explains how
excavated features and artifacts reveal the life of the people
who lived along the Potomac River in prehistory.
The relocation of the museum also allowed for the revamping and expansion of the First Residents display.
The Allegany Museum is well on its way to becoming a World Class facility. A visit to the museum would be both educational and very enjoyable.
