Unconsumed. Fresh. Playful.

All this could be written about the album "Wrong Record Side" by the band Westdead. And all that would fit.

But there are also a few places where it could be improved, which goes hand in hand with the term "unspent".

In any case, the boys and girls from Munich have presented a strong album here that contains English-language punk rock, but also takes in the genres of alternative, indie, pure rock and a lot of earworm potential.

The album contains a total of ten songs with a playing time of 31 minutes, which remind me of Social Distortion, but also a little of Angels and Airwaves.

It's not easy for me to name play tips on the album, as there are some strong pieces to be heard. So I would like to highlight three songs a bit more.

"Thx A Bomb!" is perhaps the number that stays in the ear the longest. The part just goes down well and shows how much fun the band surely had while recording it. Live, too, this will be one of the numbers that will ensure that one or two beer mugs find their way to the floor.

Perhaps more topical than ever is "War". Here, Westdead are a bit more cautious and this song also sticks in the ear.

Last but not least, of course, we have to mention the title track. After just a few chords, the track brings you out of your well-deserved nap.

Especially at the end, when the number goes full throttle, you throw your alarm clock against the wall and look forward to the other tracks.

"The band still has room for improvement in that some of the songs are a little too quick to work out. But maybe that's exactly how it's meant to be, because as a conclusion one has to certify the album and the band that the heart and soul that was invested here is certainly a good investment.

Heartfelt punk rock and lots of energy on the new album 'Wrong Record Side' by Munich quartet Westdead.

Emotions, emotions, emotions! And lots and lots of them - from heartbreak to despair. Perfectly packaged in varied and energetic melodies with often surprising twists. This is served up by the Munich quartet Westdead on their new album Wrong Record Side, which will be released on 6 June 2022. The band moves musically between heartfelt punk rock, independent and alternative, and in places is reminiscent of the beginnings of Gaslight Anthem, Social Distortion and Against me.

The album tells of personal life experiences, both positive and negative, with which many can identify. With the opener Wrong Record Side, one can intensely feel the heartbreak of losing one's first great love - both through the deep melody and especially through the pictorially descriptive chorus. Towards the end, there is an emotional and musical twist that gives powerful and angry new courage.

I find the driving Thx A Bomb!, a rousing punk rock song, and Colored Leaves, a gripping piece about good old times with a catchy sing-a-long chorus, particularly strong. With strong and soulful vocals and atmospheric melodies, Cliffs of Dover and War also convince me. And what the opening of Black Mirror reminds me of, I'm still pondering, but I keep coming back to the brilliant Heisskalt in my mind.

Four friends and their love of music

Westdead, these are four friends who are closely connected through their music and that's probably why they come across so authentically with their heartfelt punk rock - I like the term and find it really fitting. Powerful guitar riffs, catchy and gripping melodies and choruses, accompanied by varied bass lines and strong lead guitar as well as the powerful drums characterise all ten tracks. The mood is sometimes rather quiet, then loud again. And again and again surprising elements appear, which of course I can't reveal, otherwise the surprise effect is gone.

Personally, I will definitely keep an eye on the band and look forward to seeing the four friends and their joy of playing live soon.
