Traditionally boys were named at their B'rit Milah (Covenant of Circumcision) and girls when their father was called to the Torah for an Aliyah. Now many boys are circumcised in the hospital by the pediatrician, who does not name the boys or make the traditional b'rachot (blessings) and parents are looking for an occasion that will parallel the ceremony of the Bris. And so the Baby Naming Ceremony serves to enter the baby into the covenant with God.
I have many ideas for creative Baby Naming Ceremonies, including traditional blessings, and opportunities for all the family to take part.
Traditionally Ashkenazi Jews name their children for their treasured late relatives, and Sephardic Jews for their beloved living family. In each case our family names continue from generation to generation and the values and character of our family are continued. In the B'rit Bat or B'rit Ben (Covenant of the Daughter or Son) we give the baby his/her new name or names, and recall our loved ones, while bestowing many blessings on the baby, as we welcome him/her into the family and the covenant with God.
I provide a unique booklet including poems, photographs and prayers, as well as a Baby Naming Certificate for the ceremony.
