The Service Unit rents the waterfront at Green Eyrie in Harvard, MA so girls from grades 4-12 can kayak, canoe and swim.
The Fall Product Sale gives troops an opportunity to raise money in the fall to use for field trips or other activities. Participation in the sale includes selling nuts and candy, magazine subscriptions and personalized photo keepsakes and cards.
Order taking begins in late September or early October and products are delivered in mid-late November.
All troops make or decorate place mats for the Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, hosted by the Rotary Club at the Knights of Columbus. Place mats are collected by 1 leader the week before Thanksgiving.
The annual Girl Scout Cookie Program takes places from January through March. These iconic favorites fund Girl Scout troop programs for the entire year. The activity of selling cookies is directly related to our purpose of helping all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens. Someone other than the Troop Leader volunteers to be the "Cookie Parent" to handle the logistics of the sale. Cookie training usually takes place in early December. Cookies are sold both by individual girls and at cookie booth sales at local businesses. Troops can also sell cookies to donate to the military, the Westborough Food Pantry, or other community organizations.
On World Thinking Day (February 22nd), girls participate in activities with global themes to honor their sister Girl Scouts in other countries. World Thinking Day not only gives Girl Scouts a chance to celebrate international friendships, but is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of 145 countries in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
The Service Unit rents Roller Kingdom in Hudson (normally a Sunday night in late winter) so all Westborough Girl Scouts can skate and do karaoke with their friends. The only cost to the girls is $3 for skate rental plus money for arcade games and snacks. We also collect donations for a different organization each year.
Traditionally the "Father-Daughter Dance", younger scouts come with an adult to dance the night away with food and decorations organized by an older troop.
Older Scouts teach the younger Girls a variety of skills, including First Aid, fire building, sit-upon constructions, SWAPS, and Girl Scout songs.
Town Encampment is a town-wide camping trip. All the troops in town go to Camp Laurelwood in Spencer (www.gscwm.org/en/camp/camp---outdoors/troop-and-camp-rentals/Laurel.html) or Camp Green Eyrie in Harvard for a weekend (Friday-Sunday) in May every other year. Troops can spend either Friday or Saturday night at camp (or both) or they can attend on Saturday. Younger troops stay in buildings while older girls stay in tents. Activities such as boating, fishing and group games are organized for the girls during the day on Saturday. This event is a wonderful growth experience for girls and provides time for bonding between the troops. Troop leaders need the appropriate training prior to attendance.
Girl Scouts are invited each year to march in the annual Memorial Day Parade from Baxter Street to Pine Grove Cemetery, Midtown Cemetery and the Town Hall. There are speakers, music, and gun salutes in the ceremony. Girl and Boy Scouts read the list of Westborough Veterans who have died during the past year. Girls should bring permission slips and march with their troops. Wear uniform and comfortable shoes. Troops are encouraged to bring water, and everyone gets a coupon for a free ice cream at the end of the parade.
Troops gather in June to celebrate Girl Scout achievements and to acknowledge those Bridging to the next level of Scouting. Participation is highly encouraged. Girls receiving the Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards are recognized, along with Community Members who have helped Westborough Girl Scouts. The event is for the girls and their families.
At the end of the school year, troops register for the upcoming Girl Scout year, and each girl who registers receives an Early Bird patch.
