What is Vision Screening?
Your vision is so important. We want you to see as long as you live. Getting your eyes checked may not be something you think about on a daily basis but it's important.
The recommendations by the American Academy of Ophthalmology including getting your eyes checked every 2-3 years for younger individuals and every year for anyone over the age of 55. Starting at age 40, it is important to get your eyes checked as a baseline and especially if you have a family history of eye disease like glaucoma.
Vision screening is an important way to detect how urgently you need to see an eye doctor if you haven't seen one in a while. Vision screening can include checking your visual acuity (or your vision) with each eye separately on an eye chart to see what you can see in the distance, at near or both.
Other screening tests include
an Amsler grid to check your macula,
color vision testing,
confrontational visual field testing
stereopsis
eye pressure (if possible)
Confrontational visual fields can detect things like prior stroke, moderate to advanced glaucoma and even retinal detachments.
It is wonderful to see Project Wellness Wayfinder bring a vision screening booth to a local community health fair to focus on one of our most important senses, sight. We hope to see you there- see Events page for more details.
If you know of any other community health screening opportunities you'd like to see us do a vision screening booth, send us an email.
An Amsler grid can detect macular problems including macular degeneration or macular holes.
Color vision testing can be important to check for color blindness (take a free test online) but a change can also signal diseases like optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.
Stereopsis is your 3D vision or depth perception using both eyes together and it is important in children to detect poor stereopsis while we can still correct it. Stereopsis testing is one of the only tests we use both eyes together to check how they work together.
Check out the training video below if you want to be a volunteer at our next vision screening booth! Send us an email to volunteer.
