This page contains historical information about the New Gurudwara Project

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh.

We embarked on a project of relocating the Gurdwara to a new and larger building to cater to the needs of growing size of the community in the Greater Wellington region. New Gurdwara Sahib has been located on high profile corner site at:

4 – 10 Vogel Street Naenae, Lower Hutt 5011

New Building site has:

Floor Area 1,922 m² Land Area 4,046 m² Car parks in yard

We believe this would meet the requirements of sikh sangat for next few years.

Keeping in mind the needs of community, we had purchased this site for NZ $720,000.

The original Building was a New World Supermarket. The modifications to convert the supermarket structure into a Gurdwara complex has costed another approx $ 900,000

ASB bank has given us a loan facility of $ 570,000.

Society has sold its current property holdings and also raised funds through Donations from sangat in New Zealand.

The modification work is now almost complete, the Gurdwara complex Building has been strengthened to meet new Building code of New Zealand.

Fundraiser appeal:

Project update:

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh.

After taking the possession of the property on 31 July 2015 , significant progress has been made in making necessary changes to the building converting it from a supermarket site to a Gurdwara sahib. The Gurudwara Sahib Building has been strengthened to meet the New Zealand Earthquake Building compliance requirements and obtained code of compliance certificate from Lower Hutt city council.

Wellington Sangat showed a keen interest for Kaar Sewa in the initial phase, especially during the weekends. Some members of the Wellington Sangat are qualified builders who have been contributing to this project on a regular basis right from the beginning. Professional architect/draughtsperson were engaged to identify various components of a Gurdwara within this building that included Sachkhand, diwan hall, main entrance, kitchen, pantry, guest rooms, toilets and the like. Wellington Sangat was consulted at each step while finalising the building design of the Gurdwara.

The renovation work started by removing the false ceiling and wall boards of the building. The inaugural work after the Ardaas ceremony involved children from within the community who are going to be the future custodians of this building. Wellington Sangat initiative was not limited to the building work alone. Many families regularly delivered langar at the site for volunteers during the weekends.

Earthquake strengthening thus improving this building’s ability to withstand the effects of earthquakes has been completed, most importantly, improving the safety for those in and around the building. Accordingly in addition to Kaar Sewa by volunteers, professional trades people were engaged.

The executive committee had also arranged for regular open days for this site so that everyone could get a chance to visit the site and see the ongoing progress for themselves.

All executive members, Volunteers and project coordinators have worked for Gurudwara Sahib -as true spirit of “Seva”, no one has claimed or been paid any money for this project.

Gurdwara sahib building work is now complete. The Building will be officially opened on 6 Nov 2016. The approx cost of the project is around NZ $ 1.95 millions. Further improvements will be undertaken in future.
