About Us

New Zealand Sikh Society (Wellington) Inc.

New Zealand Sikh Society (Wellington) Inc. was founded in 1991 by like minded people of Sikh denominations, from Malaysia, India, Singapore, Africa, UK, Fiji and others. Over the years the community has grown in numbers, the society has maintained friendly environments and helpful attitude. We liaise and co-operate with local ethnic communities and charitable organisations and other Sikh Societies in New Zealand. On 25 September 2016, Gurdwara Sahib, Wellington from its old location in Porirua to Naenae in Lower Hutt.


Each Year, during the Annual General Meeting, seven volunteer Sevadars are appointed as the Management Committee to undertake duties in accordance with the objectives set out in the Society’s constitution.


The Financial accounts of the Society are audited at the end of each financial year, presented and approved at AGM, around Waisaki period.

Our constituion

The main objectives of our constitution are:

  • To contribute to the religious, spiritual and cultural development of the Sikhs in Wellington and the surrounding suburbs.
  • To liaise and co-operate with other New Zealand Sikh Societies to promote the Sikh faith through out New Zealand.
  • To establish and maintain a Gurudwara.
  • To conduct religious ceremonies for Sikh followers.
  • To promote and foster a better understanding of the Sikh religion amongst the people of New Zealand.

Our vision

Our objectives for the next 5 years:

  1. Develop education around Sikhi for Sangat (including children) and external stakeholders alike
  2. Enhance interaction with New Zealand and Wellington wider communities to raise awareness about Sikhs
  3. Develop support-related resources for the community in the areas of settlement, work, counselling and health
  4. Helping to generate opportunities for Sikh youth, within the Gurudwara and externally
  5. Add value to our assets by making sure they met the demands and needs of the community, as well as future growth.

Activities

Community Education:

  • Saturday Gurbani sessions at the Gurudwara
  • Annual Youth Camps
  • Biannual retreats for adults to discuss community issues
  • Creating print and digital material about Sikhi
  • Hosting guest speakers

Community Interaction:

  • Blood donation camp
  • Community representation at Wellington civic events
  • Participation at interfaith groups

  • Encouraging Sikh business around Wellington to recruit through a new Gurudwara job board
