Wellington Gurudwara when established in 1997 was the southernmost Gurdwara of the worlds located in the coolest little capital in the world. Wellington Gurdwara is managed by the New Zealand Sikh Society (Wellington) Inc. The main objective of the Society is to preach the teachings of Sikhism, to provide religious services and ceremonies, arrange educational and recreational opportunities for the community, to foster a better understanding among the people of New Zealand about Sikh religion, to promote harmony among the followers of various religious creeds in New Zealand and to promote Punjabi language.

The Sikh migration to New Zealand is more than 100 years old. The first Sikh came to New Zealand in 1890. The Sikh population in New Zealand is estimated to be approximately 19,000 out which around 600 live in Greater Wellington region. In addition, there is a substantial number of Sikh students living in Greater Wellington region who are primarily from India, Malaysia and Fiji. Worldwide Sikh population is 24 million. It is the fifth largest religion in the world.

Wellington Gurdwara is open on all the seven days of the week with a bhai ji in residence. There is a congregation every Sunday morning at the Gurudwara followed by Guru da langar (community meal).
