Counselors have a vital role in schools, supporting students to see that everyone’s journey is valuable - our experiences lead us to our successes and we can all learn from each other. Being empathetic, offering varied perspectives, and having a non-judgemental viewpoint are absolutely necessary qualities of an effective counselor. Strong interpersonal skills are the foundation to the relationship-building between all parties (staff, students, families, and the community). The ability to make everyone feel connected and cared for is key. Having gratitude for the privilege of working with all students in a proactive and preventative impactful role, even in the most challenging situations. Above all, loving people and learning; being friendly, understanding of diversity, and knowing when and how to advocate.
