A reading support programme focusing on phonological awareness, phonics instruction, vocabulary building, sight word mastery and guided reading.

Saturdays, 2 pm – 3 pm
Age group: 4-8 year olds
A weekly programme by NLB to promote the love of reading and cultivate good reading habits among young Singaporeans.
Commitment: 1 hour every week, minimum 6 months
As a KidsREAD volunteer, you will:
Execute NLB KidsREAD activities in conjunction with the book read for the week
Update volunteer and children attendance after each week’s session
Maintain system to keep track of books read and materials used
Liaise with NLB coordinator for administrative updates and other tasks like delivery of materials and training sessions for volunteers
Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age, have a good command of the English language, enjoy interacting with children, and can commit at least 6 months of their time to the programme.
Volunteers are required to undergo a compulsory training session to familiarise them with how to do storytelling, as well as the etiquette they need to observe.
Programme-specific support
KidsREAD: (i) volunteer sharing sessions; (ii) annual KidsREAD Symposium; (iii) opportunities to attend the Asian Festival of Children’s Content and the Singapore Writers Festival; and (iv) advanced training sessions to further skillsets.
Appreciation of volunteers
KidsREAD: volunteers who contribute a minimum of 41 hours within a calendar year will be invited to the annual kidsREAD Appreciation Event. Hours are derived from the number of sessions recorded, where one session is equivalent to 3 hours [Bronze (41-60 hrs); Silver (61-80 hrs); Gold (81-100 hrs); Platinum (101 hrs and above)].
Thursdays, 7.30 pm – 8.30 pm
Age group: 4-8 year olds
One-to-one reading and homework support with student volunteers.
Commitment: 1 hour every week, minimum 6 months
Volunteer scope:
Actively engage kids in one-to-one reading or homework
Take and submit attendance to the KidsNight Co-ordinator
Create and maintain borrowing and reward system to encourage good reading habits
Commitment: 1 hour every 2 weeks, minimum 6 months
As a parent engagement volunteer, you will
Be a friend/advisor/cheerleader to 3-5 disadvantaged families with pre-school children
Encourage parents to bring children consistently to WeLL pre-school programmes
Conduct house visits/chats on a monthly basis to catch up with parents and identify new issues on a timely manner
Organise gathering with parents and buddies on a quarterly basis to build a sense of community
Commitment: Ad-hoc
As a social media volunteer, you will:
Contribute posts on pre-school activities to Well & Care in Henderson-Dawson facebook and Instagram accounts
Create and maintain Whatsapp group chats as primary mode of communication with families
Disseminate information to various parties where required by the different project teams
Create posters and other publicity materials as necessary for specific projects
Commitment: One hour every week
As a volunteer manager, you will:
Organise recruitment campaigns, through physical (e.g. posters in neighbourhood) and online (e.g. giving.sg) avenues
Manage inquiries and induct new volunteers
Organise periodic bonding sessions with volunteers
