WCA August 2026 Newsletter

Join your neighbors at the annual picnic while enjoying good food and great company! The WCA will provide beverages and grilled hot dogs – please bring a potluck dish to share! We will have children’s activities and games, information on Wilburton issues, and representatives from the City Council, Bellevue Po-lice, and Bellevue Fire Department (if not on a call).

The Wilburton Community Association will hold its annual election of board officers at the WCA General-Meeting. The slate of candidates are below and nominations will also be taken at the picnic. Members are encouraged to vote with the ballot below the bios, Slate of Officers:

President—David Cagle: My wife Peggy and I moved to Wilburton 25 years ago. Before moving here, we both lived in Seattle where we met. I moved to Seattle after graduating from The Ohio State University with a BSEE. Since moving to PNW, I have worked for many different local tech firms as an electronics engineer. After 35+ years in engineering, I decided to obtain a teaching certificate so I can teach high school math. Peggy & I love our neighbors and neighborhood; you can often find us walking our dog Peyton in our local park.

Treasurer— Jim Duong has been a Wilburton resident since 2009. Jim and his family can be sighted running/ walking through the various Wilburton trails. They take full advantage of the PNW summers and are often outdoors for activities like pickleball, swimming and biking. Jim works for a technology solution provider that serves Enterprise clients in the local area. If you're looking to talk technology, he is your guy.

Secretary— Sarah Deedat/Jack Stow: This husband and wife team moved to the neighborhood in 2024. They have three school age boys and are enjoying their new neighborhood.

Bellevue Transportation Changes

Our city government is planning for unprecedented growth. The anticipated growth for Bellevue by 2044 is 35,000 New Housing

Units (+52%) and 70,000 New Jobs (+44%).

Bellevue's transportation grid for all modes (walking, biking, cars, & transit) is already 'challenged'. Ameliorating our transportation

challenges is expensive. Bellevue plans for transportation needs with a 20 year "Capital Investment Program" (CIP). The

estimated cost for our transportation 'needs' over the next 20 years is $1.55 billion. This is Bellevue's expense and does not include

transportation spending by WADOT (e.g. I-405) and Sound Transit (light rail). Anticipated 'Base Funding' for Bellevue transportation

(2027 thru 2046 from existing sources) is $686 million, covering 44% of the anticipated need. Because of this shortfall,

the transportation department is investigating new revenue sources for transportation. Currently under investigation: increase

sales tax 0.1% (10.3% to 10.4%) and/or increase vehicle registration fee $20 / vehicle.

These additional revenue sources would add $274 million, resulting in $960 million available for transportation projects (2027

thru 2045), covering 62% of the expected need. Our city government is expected to consider to implement these new taxes this fall.

Meet a neighbor

Peter & Aranca Ehrenwald

Many of you already know Aranca, with her trekking poles she is a regular walker in our neighborhood. Along with her husband Peter, they have lived in Wilburton since 1978. Both Peter and Aranca emigrated to the U.S from Europe. Peter came first as an 18-year young man with his parents in 1951. He went to Lewis & Clark College and graduated with an engineering degree. After col-lege, he went to work for Boeing, originally working as an engineer, he quickly moved into sales due to his broad language skills. Peter was selling Boeing airplanes to Eastern European airlines when he met Aranca in 1971. She was working for Air France in Munich and they were soon married. While living in Munich, their daughter was born in 1974. The family moved to Wilburton in 1978, settling into a comfortable two-story house on 129th Pl NE. The family prospered in Wilburton. Peter moved up the Boeing ranks, selling airplanes first in Europe, then to Russia, South America, and finally Asia. Aranca exercised her artistic skills as produc-er of musical-comedy productions with the Bellevue Athletic Club (now just the Boeing Club). Their daughter Elizabeth went to Bellevue HS, then onto Lewis & Clark college. Each of us should try to learn about our neighbors and share our stories with each other. We will likely find we have much in common .
