Longneck Lagoon is on Darug Country. There are various sites around the lagoon indicating extended occupation of the area.
Longneck Lagoon Field Studies Centre (now Environmental Education Centre) opened in 1977. The lagoon and surrounds (approximately 150 acres - 60 hectares) was a Gould League of NSW project and in 1972 had been reserved for flora and fauna. Initial staffing and teaching was undertaken by senior education officers from the Gould League 2 days per week until April 1978 when the NSW Department of Education appointed a teacher-in-charge and assisting teacher.
The covered seating area was added to the classroom block in the early 1990s.
The area is subject to droughts and floods and Longneck Lagoon EEC has been impacted
by both over the years.
Droughts: 1937 and 2019. There have been a number of droughts in between these years.
Floods: 1990 and 2022. There have been a number of floods prior to and in between these years.
