THE CALIFORNIA PRIVATE SCHOOL AFFADAVIT is one of the legal homeschooling options in California.
California Education code allows for a parent to create their own private homeschool by filling a private school affidavit with the state. The following are guidelines set forth by the California Dept. of Education regarding private schools:
✏️Make sure to withdraw your child from school before beginning this process. Tell them you will be filing a private school affadavit.
✏️The administrator of every private school must file an affidavit with the Superintendent of Public Instruction between October 1 and October 15 each year. Found on the California Dept. of Education website: http://www3.cde.ca.gov/psa
✏️Private school instructors must be "capable of teaching". There is no requirement for teachers to have a teaching credential or college degree.
✏️The names and addresses as well as educational qualifications of teachers must be kept on file.
✏️Instruction must be in English.
✏️Instruction must be offered "in the several branches of study required to be taught in public schools." The materials and methods you use to teach these areas are up to you.
✏️The following subjects should be offered and available to the students but you are not required to teach every subject:
✏️Grades 1-6: English, math, social sciences, science, fine
arts, health, and P.E.
✏️Grades 7-12: All that is included for grades 1-6 AND
foreign language, applied arts, vocational education,
and driver's education.
✏️It is recommended to become a member of HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) if you choose this option for homeschooling. They provide personalized guidance as well as legal protection if your homeschool is questioned by authorities.
