A couple’s first dance as husband and wife is a special, intimate part of the wedding reception—one that you simply can’t get wrong. This is a very symbolic moment in the wedding, and there is no shortage of great photo opportunities here. The lights will be low and you will be on the move. That means your photographer will need a fast recycling light source (a photo gun) in order to keep the image sharp. He may choose to use a bounce flash or a diffused light source here, and he will definitely need a high-quality lens that will allow him to move between tight-cropped shots and full-length photos. You’ll want him to get photos of your expressions as you gaze at one another, but stop dancing periodically so he can get some quick face-on shots, too.
The person capturing your wedding should be constantly aware of what’s happening around the room. Is there a live band playing the music? Are people blowing bubbles? Your photographer should move around the room as you dance in order to incorporate the guests and environment into his shots. The difference between a good photographer and a great one is creativity. While a crisp, sharp picture of newlyweds dancing in the centre of the frame is perfectly acceptable, there are some highly creative shots your photographer can get simply by taking in the environment.
Don’t settle for just the obvious wedding photos. They are important and you will want them, but encourage your photographer to use a little creative license and move beyond the traditional.
