The Ethiopian government has launched significant initiatives to boost Solar Stand-alone Systems in remote regions, aiming for universal electrification by 2025 through the Ethiopian National Electrification Program (NEP) 2.0. However, rural social institutions still face challenges in accessing sustainable, reliable solar PV systems.
To address these issues, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), via Energising Development Ethiopia (EnDev), led a project focused on establishing a Sustainability Framework for the provision, operation, maintenance and end of life management of Solar Stand-alone Systems in these institutions. This initiative seeks to leverage best practices and evidence-based approaches.
The project kicked off with a Baseline Study to assess current states of solar PV installations at social institutions in Ethiopia, evaluating organizational, economic, technical, social, and environmental factors across the project lifecycle. Based on this effort a comprehensive Sustainability Framework was developed.
Although the Sustainability Framework was developed specifically for Ethiopia, key principles and aspects are valid for other Sub-Saharan countries as well.
