Poor oral hygiene increases risk of dental issues and is linked to many systemic disease, and this becomes increasingly evident in low-resource areas.
Through the FBIP, a Smart Toothbrush is being designed; capable of oral cavity localization, evaluating brushing quality and real -time feedback.
The Smart Toothbrush is intended to improve inclusive healthcare to low resource regions and to individuals of groups susceptible to insufficient oral care.
The Smart Toothbrush provides users with feedback on which areas of their teeth are being brushed effectively and which areas require improvement.
This feedback is displayed through an interactive, teeth-model induction charger that visually highlights the areas being brushed well and those needing additional attention.
3D-printed with PLA, designed to replicate the geometry and ergonomics of commercial electric toothbrushes.
Housing accommodates a PCB, battery, and motor assembly while maintaining a compact form factor.
Used SolidWorks and Blender for CAD
3D-printed induction charger and tooth model for aesthetic purposes
Custom PCB centred around an ESP32 for onboard processing, memory, and wireless communication.
Used accelerometer/gyroscope and magnetometer sensors to provide up to 9 degrees of freedom (9-DoF) motion tracking.
Used 3.3 V voltage regulation, filtering circuitry, and signal conditioning to ensure stable sensor operation.
Potential Smart Tooth Brush UI
Used IMU data to generate yaw, pitch, and roll (YPR) orientation data, and Arduino IDE to execute directly on an ESP32.
Python-based data collection pipelines recorded samples for machine learning training.
Achieved approximately 97% Macro-F1 score when classifying the mouth into three brushing regions.
Software architecture included user calibration routines, real-time classification, and GUI visualization tools for performance evaluation.
VP Design of the 2025 - 2026 school year, Salim Kanji, preseneted his hard work at his Biomedical Engineering Thesis presentation day. Hats off to Salim and the design team for the great work done on this project.
