Some comments and quotes on mathematics and science.
Mathematical expressions have, however, their special tendencies to pervert thought: the definiteness may be spurious, existing in the equations but not in the phenomena to be described; and the brevity may be due to the omission of the more important things, simply because they cannot be mathematized.
L. F. Richardson, 1919
It is never safe to say that a particular field in Mathematics is dead or has outlived its usefulness. I have heard many pronouncements to that effect, often made with malice towards some: they have usually been belied by later events.
E. Hille, 1959
If there is a book that more than any other deserves to be printed, this is surely the Logarithmic Tables. Their use will be eternal and, furthermore, they will never change as time changes.
H.T. Koehler, 1847
