If you want to make a good first impression attract people to your site and build your brand well your websites design is really important. While there are all sorts of things that will factor into the success of your website your major concern is the design. So what exactly should you focus on to make sure your web design is flawless? Try to remember these things as you work.
Getting your site navigation right so it flows well is something to give a lot of thought. Your approach with planning is instrumental to success because it will give you ample time to design the navigation layout.
This is the part of the site that is rather mechanical but it has to be treated like a design aspect because it does have an impact on the appearance. If your visitors find the navigation hard to understand in terms of knowing how to go from one page to the other then they tend to leave early. You want people to stay focused on your content and not be distracted by fussing with the link structure.
Usually all site designs automatically place the homepage link right at the top and usually under the header.
We recommend using the link text Home so people know immediately the purpose. People sometimes like going back to the homepage after they read something so it matters for the home link to be on all site pages. If you lack consistency with link placement people probably will get the feeling the site is unprofessional. This has turned into a web standard as most of the web users now by default expect to return back to the main page of the website by clicking on the logo on the top left corner.
Use Alternate Domains: In order to protect your brand and ensure that your website is found by your target audience you should register alternate domain names or multiple versions of your domain name with various extensions. This step is to only prevent others from taking advantage of the free domain names and registering them. While it isn't exactly a part of your site design this is an important step to make sure you don't lose any valuable readers. All that you need to do then is set up the domains to re-direct to your main site which is something that all of the bigger companies do when they want to protect their brands and raise awareness of their websites. For example don't just register the .com register the .org and .net as well to make sure that you are covered in the three most popular extensions. This helps you make sure that you wont have any competition from those domains within the search engines.
There's much more to web design than what we discussed here; in reality this is only the tip of the iceberg. You can always make changes to your site design but it is generally not a good idea to make large changes.
