Wearables & Motivation

Wearable devices, such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, and health monitors, have gained significant popularity in recent years (Koutromanos & Kazakou, 2020). These devices are designed to be worn on the body and are equipped with various sensors to track and monitor different aspects of a person's health and well-being. While wearables are commonly associated with fitness and health monitoring, they can also have a significant impact on motivation and behaviour change. Motivation plays a crucial role in determining whether individuals engage in and maintain healthy behaviours.

While wearables have shown promise in motivating behaviour change, it's important to note that they are not a magic solution on their own. Motivation is a complex process influenced by various factors, including personal beliefs, social support, and intrinsic desires. Wearables should be viewed as tools that complement and support individuals in their pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, rather than a guaranteed solution.

Researchers continue to explore the potential of wearables in motivating behaviour change and its usage in education. Wearables have the potential to positively influence motivation by providing real-time feedback, enabling goal setting, fostering social support, personalising recommendations, and promoting self-awareness. However, the ultimate success of behaviour change still relies on individual factors and the integration of wearables into a holistic approach that considers psychological, social, and environmental factors.
