The positive health impacts on children and adolescents
A recent 11-study systematic review showed that wearable activity tracker-based programs had a positive influence on daily levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, step totals, and sedentary behavior. The studies used various wearable devices such as Fitbit (used in 9 of the 11 studies), Garmin Vivofit Jr., and Xiaomi Mi Band, and employed strategies like self-monitoring and goal setting for physical activity.
Key messages:
Children and adolescents generally do not engage in enough physical activity to meet recommended levels, but commercially available wearable devices can effectively promote physical activity and improve health outcomes.
Wearable activity tracker-based programs have been found to increase daily levels of MVPA, step counts, and reduce sedentary behavior among children and adolescents.
Strategies such as self-monitoring and goal setting for physical activity, along with the use of wearable devices, can enhance motivation and engagement in physical activity in this population.
