Media Portrayal

Iron Man (1963/2008)

Tony Stark's infamous suit JARVIS portrays an extreme version of the exo-suit that the U.S. and Russian governments are currently trying to implement. Although extreme, this demonstrates how valuable a single soldier can become when enhanced with technology, and why this development may revolutionize the way wars are fought.

Back to the Future (1985)

This film depicts TV glasses, where someone can wear these glasses anywhere and be watching television. This is a good foreshadow of Google Glass (released in 2013), and Amazon's Echo Frames.

Spy Kids (2001)

The "stompers," or super-strength boots that the children use, can be compared to the boots developed by the U.S. military, which essentially also provide "super-strength" through the use of robotic technology.

The portrayal of wearable technology in the context of movies like Spy Kids makes it seem powerful and desirable to the general public. The message is that even small children become powerful war machines when given the right technology and the knowledge of how to use it.

Batman Begins (2005)

Batman's cape is an example of wearable technology. When he touches it with his right glove, an electrical current goes through it that makes it solidify and become a shield. This demonstrates the idea of using clothing for defense in combat purposes.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

In this film, the characters wear exo-suits similar to ONYX in function. The characters are portrayed as heroic, which could influence the public's perspective on such exo-suits.
