Next WEA Ramblers short walk to be held at Blackwood
On Tuesday 16 June, the Ramblers are undertaking a walk of 8kms from the Coromandel Railway station. We will catch the Belair train from Adelaide at 9.31am. Others may meet us at the Coromandel station at 10am. New walkers are welcome.
The walk will head west from the station and down along Magpie creek. After 2kms we will leave the creek and go north up the hill to cross the railway line and visit the Colebrook reconciliation site. There we will see the Silvio Apponyi fountain and the statue of the Grieving Mother.
Between 1943 and 1972 some 350 Aboriginal children lived on this site, isolated from their families. The fountain is now a permanent memorial in remembrance of the Aboriginal children of the 'Stolen Generation' and their families.
The Blackwood Reconciliation Group holds a March during National Reconciliation Week each year, ending at Colebrook Reconciliation Park. This was just recently on Sunday 31 May.
From there we will walk through Karinya reserve and then back to the Wittunga Botanic Gardens for a quick visit.
Those who return to the Adelaide railway from Coromandel will lunch together in a cafe near the station.

WEA Ramblers Best Walk 2025
At the Ramblers 2025 Christmas lunch, the award for the best walk of the year was presented to Ian Harding, who led a 11.3 km loop walk in Kyeema Conservation Park in June.
The walk started at the carpark at the corner of Brookman and Woodgate Hill roads and looped through parts of the Kuitpo Forestry area and the Kyeema Conservation Park.
The map of this walk is the latest addition to the collection of 12 walks in the Knott Hill-Kuitpo-Kyeema area, which can be found on the Ramblers map gallery site by clicking here.
WEA Ramblers has a Facebook page
Trevor Mead has been adding photos and reports on walks to a WEA Ramblers Adelaide facebook page for several years now. This year he has been more diligent in adding new stories. These include many photographs of wildflowers taken on Ramblers walks by member (and now Club Leader) Charles Bowden. If you are on facebook do have a look now and then.
WEA Ramblers Celebrated 100 years in 2025
During 2025 the Committee organized several events to celebrate 100 years since the first walk on August 16, 1925.
The main event was a birthday party in a private function room at the Lakes Hotel at West Lakes on Saturday 16 August 2025. Forty-five people attended, sixteen of whom were past members. Trevor Mead compiled a history of the Ramblers, and Frances Robertson put together a slide show of 500 photos of Ramblers. Both were made available on a USB which was given out at the party, where 300 of the photos were shown on the large TV screen.
Trevor Mead, working with Rod Quintrell of WalkingSA, organized two special events. One was a gathering of Ramblers and representatives of other walking clubs at the Queen Adelaide room at the Adelaide Town Hall on September 10. The other a gathering at Government House on November 5.
Photographs of the three events above are shown on the Photo Gallery Page.
Walking 100kms on the Willunga Basin was organized. The total distance on the trail covered in nine Sunday walks was 111 kms.
The Coastal Trail from Outer Harbor to Hallett Cove, was completed over six of the eight Tuesday short walks in the 2025 program.
