Activities

The W.E.A. Ramblers Bushwalking Club Inc. (the Club) was formed in 1925. It is a special interest group of W.E.A. Clubs Inc. The aim of the Club is to bring together people who are keen walkers and lovers of nature.

Day hikes are held fortnightly on Sundays throughout the year. Half day hikes are held on Tuesdays, currently once a month, but more frequently into the future. The Our Next Walks page displays details of our current walk program. Our stomping ground page illustrates the areas where we walk. The meeting place for each walk is listed in the program. This is usually at 9.00am, but for walks further afield this may be at 9.30am. Short walks start around 10.00am. Some walks, especially in summer, may list a public transport location near the City as the meeting place and travel option.

Hikes are mainly in the Conservation Parks within a radius of 30 km of Adelaide. The walking distance for the Sunday hikes is from 12 to 18 km, in about 4 to 5 hours total lapsed time. Tuesday hikes are from 6 to 9 km. Summer hikes are generally easier to suit the weather. It is advised that walkers unfamiliar with the hike venue seek advice from the hike leader prior to the walk (contact details in the program).

Twice a year, on the June and October holiday weekends, trips are organized to stay in a more distant location within South Australia, for hikes on both Saturday and Sunday, and a half-day hike on the Monday.

The Club is responsible for maintaining section 8 of the Heysen Trail between Piccadilly and Norton Summit. Twice a year a working bee is organized to clear overgrowth, maintain signage, and repair or re-route sections of the trail.

Participation in a Club activity is entirely voluntary, and walkers are individually responsible for their own safety, and their possessions. A walker is required to sign the attendance register on each hike and that signature denotes acknowledgment of risk and acceptance of responsibility for the walker’s own safety and of the risks of injury, illness or death or damage to any property, and also agreement to follow the hike regulations listed in the Guidelines for members and visitors.

It is essential for walkers to wear strong boots or shoes with good tread and to carry at least 1 litre of water. Walkers should wear strong casual clothing, and bring food for picnic lunch, contact & medical details, whistle, personal first aid kit, day backpack and fees. Also recommended are waterproof jacket and walk overpants, hat, walking pole, small ground-sheet, sunscreen and insect repellent, maps and compass, diary and pencil, and extra warm clothing.

Members are encouraged to investigate and survey walks in order to participate, by leading a hike. Maps and information are available from the Hike Coordinator or Publicity Officer.

New walkers and visitors are welcome. Persons aged under 18 years may participate in a hike provided they are accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. For the first three hikes the cost to a visitor is the same as for a member. After three hikes, completed to the satisfaction of the Club Committee, a person aged 18 years or over becomes eligible for membership of the Club.

Fees

The current cost for each Sunday hike is $5. Walkers who are not financial members will be charged $10. A charge between $5 and $15, depending on the distance traveled, is charged to all walkers when Car Pooling is organized. There is no charge for Tuesday walks, however walkers are expected to join as a member when elegible. The annual membership fee is $20, which includes membership of W.E.A. Clubs Inc. and Walking SA. Walkers who are passengers in private cars driving to hike venues or to camps are asked to contribute towards the cost of fuel at the completion of the journey. The recommended rate is 10 cents per total kilometers traveled.
