How to reach Sustainable Transport: Investigating the relationship between transportation and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Date & Time: TBA

Transportation is a key factor in sustainable development. It can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve access to essential services, and promote economic growth. At the same time, transportation can also have a negative impact on the environment and local communities. This virtual workshop will explore the relationship between transportation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We will consider how transportation can be used to support sustainable development, and identify some of the challenges that need to be addressed. This will be an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences, and to identify ways that we can work together to achieve the SDGs. Transportation is related to many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015. For example one of the SDGs is to “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.”  One way transportation supports this goal is by providing access to essential services, such as healthcare and education. Another way transportation can contribute to sustainable development is by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2018, transportation accounted for 24% of global CO2 emissions from fuel combustion . Reducing these emissions will require a shift to more sustainable transportation options, such as public transit, bicycling, and walking. This virtual workshop will explore these and other topics related to transportation and SDGs.
