Our Chapter's Definition of Community Service
Service projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or city communities; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; and be well-planned, organized, and executed.
The Wayne chapter defines service as intentional action that contributes meaningfully to the well-being of others in the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro community. Eligible service:
Directly supports individuals in need or those less fortunate;
Helps care for the environment or animals;
Positively impacts the school community;
Is not performed for financial compensation or personal gain;
Does not directly benefit a single individual or the member’s family; and
Is not completed for course credit.
Activities such as the following will not count toward NHS service hours:
Attending club meetings or participating in general extracurricular activities unless direct service is performed during that time
Performing in, ushering for, or assisting backstage with musical, theatrical, or other performance-based events
Assisting family, friends, or neighbors with personal tasks (e.g., babysitting, yard work, snow shoveling, moving)
Volunteering time at a paid place of employment (even if unpaid during those hours)
Completing community service as part of a court-mandated requirement
Participating in personal religious duties (e.g., bake sales, childcare, choir, teaching, or event setup for one's church or youth group)
Supporting political campaigns or candidates, including canvassing, distributing materials, or staffing events
Each member is responsible for completing at least 12 service hours throughout each school year. These service hours are divide evenly across the grading periods. Specific dates for service hours will be provided at the beginning of each school year.
Of the 12 service hours, each member must complete at least 1 hour of Independent Service and at least 1 hour of Chapter Service.
The Wayne Chapter asks that you select an Independent Service Project (ISP) from the following list of already approved projects:
