Applying for Membership

In the spring semester, the Wayne Chapter invites WHS students to apply for membership to the Wayne Chapter of National Honor Society.


To be eligible to apply for membership, WHS students must

  • belong to the sophomore or junior class,

  • have been enrolled at Waynesboro High School for at least one semester,

  • be preparing to receive a standard or advanced studies diploma, and

  • have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5 on a weighted scale.


The application process requires that candidates demonstrate aspects of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

Invitational Letter

Congratulations! You are eligible to apply for membership in the Wayne Chapter of the National Honor Society.


National Honor Society (NHS) is a service-based organization. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.


Further information and application materials will be presented at an informational meeting. In general, membership applications must include the following components:

  1. Acknowledgement Statement (physical submission)

  2. Service Record (submit via Google Classroom)

  3. Leadership Record (submit via Google Classroom)

  4. Essay (submit via Google Classroom)

  5. Office Referral Explanation (physical submission)

  6. Teacher Recommendations (submitted via Google Form)


Applications for membership are assessed by our anonymous NHS Faculty Council. The NHS Faculty Council will carefully consider your scholarship, leadership, service, and character.


We encourage you to discuss the contents of this application with your parents/guardians and to turn in your application by the due date and time indicated on the Google Classroom as well as on application materials. Please note that late applications will not be accepted.


Please be aware that failure to respond to communications, to submit an acknowledgement statement, and/or to submit a completed application will be assumed as declining the invitation to join.

Membership Guidelines

Member responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  1. All members are expected to maintain the standards for membership—regarding scholarship, leadership, character, and service—as described in the chapter bylaws.

  2. Each member must maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5 on a weighted scale

  3. Dues for this chapter are $20.00. Dues are payable to the chapter within 30 days of induction.

  4. Attendance at chapter meetings is mandatory.

    • Our chapter meets on the second Thursday of each month. Meetings run approximately one hour.

  5. Members are required to wear their NHS pins all day on our monthly meeting dates.

  6. Each member is responsible for completing at least 12 service hours throughout each school year.

    • The service hours are divided evenly across the grading periods.

    • Service must adhere to our chapter’s definition and guidelines regarding qualifying projects. This information is provided in our chapter bylaws and on the chapter’s Google Classroom.

    • Service information must be recorded using the forms provided by the chapter and must be verified. This documentation is to be turned in to the NHS adviser no later than the quarter service date.
