Wave sequences are created in just the same way as on the WAVESTATION. However there are some differences. On this page you will find what you need to know:
The WAVESTATION uses some sort of scale from 1 to 499 (500=GATE: infinite). Each step has a duration of 24ms. There is no tempo mode. On the Kronos we have the option to select between Time or Tempo. Time mode wil give you ms, in steps of 10ms. Above 500ms and up you will get steps of 100ms. In Tempo mode you can select from 1/64 up to 1 measure (and GATE). So how do we translate the WAVESTATION timing to the Kronos? Two options:
Time mode: calculate the time and select the closest value on the Kronos
Tempo mode: this is more suitable for rhythmic sequences: Calculate a suitable tempo
In order to find the right time, you can multiply the WAVESTATION value with 24. This will give you the amount of ms. To do this fast, I created a table in Excel like:
Problem is that the Kronos will let you only give values in steps of 10 ms. So you have to round it to the nearest value. For instance WAVESTATION value of 1 is 24 ms. On the Kronos you can use 20 or 30 ms. If you have multiple steps, than you can calculate the difference and try to compensate once a while. For instance: five steps of 1 could be translated in three steps of 20 ms and two steps of 30 ms. I did, but it is up to you if you want to go that far.
On the Kronos you can get tempo synced sequences, which was not possible on the WAVESTATION. However, it is especially very convenient for Rhythmic sequences. You have to determine the duration of the beats on the WAVESTATION sequence. Then you can easily calculate the BPM and create a translation. For example:
If each beat has a duration of 24 steps (576ms), then we can calculate the BPM's:
1000ms/576ms * 60 = 104,17 BPM
So we set the tempo of the Kronos to 104,17 BPM. This would give the following translation table:
Duration WAVESTATION
24
12
6
3
Duration
Kronos (104.17 BPM)
1/4 note
1/8 note
1/16 note
1/32 note
The same direction settings are available on the Kronos. However B/F does not work the same way. The difference is described in the table below. In order to get the Kronos doing the same thing as the WAVESTATION you will have to use Forward instead of B/F.
For instance, if in the original WAVESTATION where 4 steps with B/F setting, then you will have to create 8 steps with direction set on forward on the Kronos, like: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1.
Table 1: Difference between B/F setting between WAVESTATION and Kronos:
WAVESTATION B/F
Backwards/Forwards loops: will repeat first and last step twice. For instance a four step pattern will be like:
1 2 3 4 - 4 3 2 1 - 1 2 3 4 etc.
Kronos B/F
Backwards/Forwards loops: will not repeat first and last step twice. For instance a four step pattern will be like:
1 2 3 4 - 3 2 1 - 2 3 4 etc.
