Loess-a yellowish-brown dirt or dust that's made up of silt, sand, and clay (which is what makes the "Yellow River" yellow in color)
Acupuncture - An ancient Chinese treatment for healing that uses needles placed in various areas of the skin.
Calligraphy - A style of writing that was considered an art form using brushes to paint the characters.
Civil service - The group of people who worked for the government. People had to pass a difficult examination to earn a job in the civil service.
Oracle Bones-pieces of bone or turtle shell used to communicate with spirits and gods.
Dynasty-A set of rulers from the same family.
Mandate of Heaven-belief that leaders authority came directly from heaven and when they died they would go to heaven and serve on the "divine court" there. This mandate was established during the Zhou Dynasty and the rulers during this time were expected to maintain "the support of heaven" by being a good and fair ruler. If they were not a good ruler or they lost a conflict then it meant they had lost the support of heaven and the mandate was taken.
Mongols - The nomadic peoples of the north who often raided China.
Qin Shi Huang - The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang united China under one rule and began the Qin dynasty.
Terracotta - A type of baked clay ceramic. It was used in building the 8,000 life size terracotta soldiers that were buried with Emperor Qin.

Legalism-one of the three major philosophies of Ancient China that believes that believes that people should be harshly punished and controlled by a strong, centralized government for bad behavior and rewarded for good behavior.
Silk - A luxurious material made from the cocoons of silkworms. Silk was highly prized in ancient China and was only worn by wealthy nobles.
Daoism - Dao= "The Way". One of the three major philosophies of Ancient China, Taoism follows the teachings of Lao-Tzu. Followers are taught to act in harmony with the natural course of things. They try to avoid disturbing the natural order. This often means that they take no action at all. Daoists believe that striving for power and wealth is a waste of energy.
Yin and Yang - A part of the philosophy of Daoism, the yin and yang are opposites that balance each other throughout nature such as "light and dark", "hot and cold", and "male and female".
Confucianism-One of the three major philosophies of Ancient China based on the teachings of Confucius that taught people to focus more on family and relationships more than themselves and how to behave in their private life as well as the rules of good government based on love, justice, respect, wisdom and sincerity.
Filial Piety- a person's responsibility to take care of their parents and elderly family members.

Mandate of Heaven-belief that gods had blessed that person with the right to rule. When a ruler or dynasty lost power, this meant that the gods no longer found them fit to rule (could be from a natural disaster, invasion, corruption, etc...)
Feudalism-King-Nobles (Lords/Warriors), Peasants, and Merchants. All on a give and take system based around LAND.
