We diversify water supply portfolios by integrating technology innovation with system-level optimization
Water supply is at a fundamental turning point. Conventional water sources such as rivers and lakes are increasingly threatened by persistent contamination, growing water demand, and the impacts of climate change that undermine long-term supply reliability and sustainability. At the same time, centralized systems built for past demands struggle with aging infrastructure and emerging contaminants.
My group addresses these challenges by advancing non-conventional water reuse approaches, decentralized treatment technologies, and system-level optimization of water supply systems to diversify water supply portfolios. Our overarching goal is to develop safe and resilient water supply systems that can adapt to region-specific conditions, regulatory uncertainty, and future changes in water demand.
Water reuse (물 재이용)
Water reuse refers to the treatment of non-conventional water sources, such as wastewater effluent, to produce water fit for specific end uses. Depending on the required water quality, reuse applications range from non-potable reuse, including irrigation and industrial cooling, to potable reuse, which produces water suitable for drinking water supplies. By tailoring treatment trains to end-user requirements and local conditions, water reuse enables a flexible pathway to expand water supply portfolios beyond traditional sources, while reducing environmental impacts.
My group focuses on designing optimal, fit-for-purpose water reuse systems through integrated process modeling and technoeconomic assessment. We develop modeling frameworks that evaluate full treatment trains, explicitly balancing safety, performance, and cost. Our research places particular emphasis on two reuse applications that are either not yet implemented or rapidly emerging in Korea: potable water reuse, where treated water is directly or indirectly introduced into drinking water supply networks after meeting drinking water standards, and industrial water reuse for the semiconductor industry, where reclaimed water is treated to meet the stringent quality requirements for ultrapure water production. Through this work, our goal is to develop safe, cost-effective, and application-specific water reuse systems that expand and diversify future water supply portfolios.
Decentralized water treatment (분산형 수처리)
Decentralized treatment refers to water treatment systems that are deployed closer to the point of use, rather than relying solely on large, centralized facilities. By treating water at the building, campus, or community scale, decentralized systems can reduce distribution demands and enhance system flexibility. When designed with appropriate technologies and operating strategies, decentralized treatment enables fit-for-purpose water management that accounts for local water quality, end-user needs, and site-specific constraints.
Nevertheless, the implementation of decentralized systems remains limited due to challenges in adapting today’s chemical-intensive water treatment processes to small-scale, modular applications. Achieving practical decentralization therefore requires reducing reliance on chemical usage in both treatment and maintenance to enhance the operational autonomy of small systems. My group focuses on leveraging sunlight and stimuli-responsive materials to reduce chemical dependence and develop more autonomous decentralized water treatment technologies.
