WasteFlower

Library Installation

Experience your discarded recyclables come to life! Crafting and electrical engineering collide in this kinetic art exhibit, coming soon to the George C. Gordon Library.

WasteFlowers are hybrid flower forms made from repurposed campus waste and recycled materials students source from home! WasteFlowers aim to raise campus awareness and encourage discussion on topics of sustainability and the environment.

Select WallFlowers are ‘sensitized’ -- as in equipped with a motion sensor, small computer processor, and motor. These digitally enhanced WallFlowers are kinetic and designed to respond to disturbances in their environment. Library Project Description

Entering the bottom floor of the George C. Gordon Library at WPI, from the stairs or elevator, you are immediately confronted by a big blue wall. Here we plan to create a unique and temporary ‘mosaic’ of hand and laser cut flower forms made from recycled materials. Each piece will be applied to the blue wall using removable adhesive.

Our team will fabricate a set of digitally sensitized WallFlowers to be installed on the library floors above at select locations. These WallFlowers will engage library visitors with information about the project and direct them to the larger mosaic down below.

Sensitized Flowers

Entering the bottom floor of the George C. Gordon Library at WPI, from stairs or elevator, you are immediately confronted by big blue wall. Students from the C and D Term WasteWorks Humanities Practicum will create a unique and temporary ‘mosaic’ of hand and laser cut flower forms made from recycled materials and commercial packaging. Each piece will be applied to the blue wall using removable adhesive. The mosaic will be abstract in nature with text and signage explaining the work and our creative intentions.

The WallFlower mosaic will be the anchor or destination point for the larger public art campaign on campus.

The project will also include select art installations around campus that connect to the larger initiative.
