About

WasteWorks is a Humanities and Arts Practicum developed by Dan Schimmel during his time as an Artist-in-Residence at the WPI School of Arts & Sciences. Students work together as a creative team in an effort to design and deploy interactive art installations on campus using waste as a creative material.

At WasteWorks, the material is the message! We use trash to make art that examines waste from a creative, social, and environmental perspective.

WPI’s Maker Space at the Innovation Studio is our creative hub and students are encouraged to combine traditional handcrafts (scissors, glue guns, sewing machines) with new creative technologies like laser cutters and 3D printers.

Collaboration and coordination are key components to a successful project and students quickly learn to leverage their skills and ideas to achieve creative project objectives.

*Our long-term aim is to map the WPI waste stream and source sustainable art supplies for current and future projects.
