Waste@Work

A plastic recycling project in south Senegal

Why?

Plastic waste is overwhelming the cities, villages and beaches in Casamance, South  Senegal. Livestock, birds, fish, and sea animals pay the price, as do people when microplastics pollutes the soil and get into the food we eat. Birds and turtles get caught in floating plastic when they dive for food, fish get caugth in ghost nets in the sea.

How?

The project aims to recycle plastic waste into paving stones and other useful products. Our primary goal is to contribute to waste management in collaboration with the local community. The project also includes education and awareness-raising activities in schools, as well as building plastic waste collection stations.

Waste@Work was started in 2020 by Hilde Huus-Hansen and Moussa Fofana, through the Norwegian organization Niafourang's Friends (Niafourangs Venner), that is based in Senegal. Engineers Without Borders, Norway is our main partner. The project is funded by The Norwegian Retailer's Environment Fund in Norway (HMF).
