Shafik is an IEEE member and the Team Lead at the Dig Connectivity Research Laboratory (DCRLab) in Kampala, Uganda. Shafik earned a Master’s degree in Information Technology Engineering, with a minor in Computer and Communication Networks, from Yazd University in the Islamic Republic of Iran under the supervision of Prof. Mohammed Ghasemzadeh and Dr. S.M. Matinkhah. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at the Faculty of Science & Computing, Ndejje University, Kampala, Uganda. In addition to his academic background, Wasswa has received specialized training from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health in the U.S. His training includes courses in Data Quality, Monitoring and Evaluation Fundamentals, and Protecting Human Research Participants.  

His expertise focuses on designing and developing lightweight, computationally efficient models to address pressing social and environmental challenges. His interests stretch to Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Image Processing, and Sustainable Computing, with applications in Digital Health, Environmental Informatics, Social Computing, and Green Cybersecurity. He is popularly known for his authored books, for instance, Factoring Technology in Global Sustainability: A Focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, Global Sustainable Transition with Inclusion: A Focus on the People with Disabilities and the Marginalized, and Next-Gen Solutions for Sustainable Agronomy: Application, Technologies, and Management. He has co-edited several multi-disciplinary books, including Sustainable Healthcare Systems in Africa: Technologies, Practices, and Management, Transforming Healthcare Sector Through Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Sustainability, and Blockchain Technologies for Smart Circular Economy and Organisational Sustainability.    

Besides research, Shafik gained professional and industrial experience in various roles. He worked as a System Administrator at Pacelabs, Community Data Officer at Programme for Accessible health, Communication and Education (Pace-Uganda), a Research Associate at TechnoServe and Mercy Corps, a Research Assistant and Data Clerk at Population Services International, Uganda (PSI-Uganda), and Living Goods, a Research Lead at the Socio-economic Data Centre (SEDC-Uganda), and a former Managing Director at Asmaah Charity Organisation.
