In January 1939, Washington legend Mary Italin passed away.
The WCHS school board purchased the property for the new high school, known in 1939 as the "Edgemere Birkett site," for $9500.
The Brookhill Subdivision started development in 1939, creeping up Hilldale from North Main. Brookhill is the only known subdivision in the history of the town which officially restricted its residents to "those of the caucasian race."

The first manager was Maynard Meyers of Eureka and the first cashier was Phyllis Smith. The first movie shown in the theatre was "Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever" starring Mickey Rooney.

A short-lived celebration was started in Washington during this year called Turkey Day, where live turkeys were thrown off of buildings on the square to hungry citizens. The celebration would only last two years.
