1930

A new service station was built by the Washington Service Company on the old "Ben Frederick Corner," what we would now call 501 Walnut Street.  The station was managed by J.B. Hoke.

A new service station was also built at 802 Peoria Street, now the corner of Peoria and Franklin Streets.  There has been a working station at the site ever since.

On May 2, 1930 the Denhart Bank closed their doors due to the effects of the depression.  A criminal investigation ensued with Henry Denhart and Harlan Kingsbury eventually being found not guilty of any malfeasance, but the settling of all the bank's claims would take over a decade.

The year also saw the first female grand jury members to ever serve in Tazewell County, both coming from Washington.  Harriet Zinser and Mae Tanton were selected by Township Supervisor Bennett to serve.

The 1930 U.S. Census gives Washington a population of 1,741 residents, noting little growth had occurred over the past 70 years.
