Two non-local prospectors and three Washington men were drilling for a natural gas well near Washington on November 22, 1889, when a struck match led to an explosion, injuring all five men. The Washingtonians injured were Henry Denhart, Rev. Smith, and John B. Snyder.
Mostoller & Pfeiffer took over the old Heiple & Portman dry goods store on South Main St. Pfeiffer would buy out Mostoller near the turn of the century and keep the store running until 1924, when it became Renfer's.
