Washington's chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star women's lodge was organized on March 30, 1888.
Appearing in the Woodford Sentinel, April 12, 1888:
While in Washington, T.C. last Monday, on business we were invited to step into G.R. Hornish & Sons grocery store, where to our astonishment we saw before our eyes stacks of groceries, and every article usually kept in a first class city grocery store. From cellar to garret we found the goods piled up in one solid heap. It has often been a wonder and surprise to the people where this firm sells all of their groceries. Notwithstanding the immense amount of groceries piled up in their store room we found that the proprietor had gone to Chicago to lay in a fresh stock of groceries, which will pile them up largely. They have potatoes of all grades and kinds. The seed potatoes, from the late to the early seed, and the eating potatoes is also there. In flour they have an endless quantity and a never ending variety of brands, and as any different prices as there are brands.
The eastern block on the northeast corner of the square was built in 1888. Its original tenants included the Sherman House Hotel, Ieuter Saloon, and the Kollman Meat Market.
