The open lot west of the school building on Spruce Street was converted into a city park.  Then just a barren piece of land, trees were planted as the first step.

Measles took its grip on the town.

Former Tazewell County Sheriff, attorney, state legislator and Tazewell County Judge David Kyes moved back to Washington.  He lived in Washington in the 1850's and ran a grocery store before ambition took him elsewhere.  Kyes would pass away December 5, 1891, followed by his wife Hannah two days later.
