The William B. Bogardus Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Post 474 was mustered on August 18, 1884, with 29 charter members. G.A.R. groups flourished until the mid-1900s when Civil War veterans died off at an astonishing clip. It was said at one point that over 150 Civil War veterans passed away every day.
