It had been eight years since Washington had a newspaper. In 1867 a man arrived in town with a press. He printed the first issue of the new Washington newspaper, which apparently was impressive enough to acquire many advance subscriptions of what was to come, after which the man quietly left town, bilking many community members of their money and hurting business for the next entrepreneur.
Severe drought hit Central Illinois, leaving the Illinois River almost impassable by vessel and drying most wells.
Rev. Wells Andrews passed away on March 12, 1867.
