Washington growers in 1866 experienced an extremely short growing season. The area had overnight frost conditions as late as June 18 and an early first frost in the fall of September 21, leaving a growing season of only 95 days.
Charles Anthony had been working as a clerk at the Richard D Smith dry goods store, and after a while, he purchased a partial interest in the business. Henry Denhart, working for one of the town doctors, purchased Smith's portion in 1866. This began a partnership that would lead to the Anthony & Denhart Bank.
The old Methodist Church at the corner of Walnut and Elm was constructed.
