1865

In 1865 a wood frame building was built by Pearl on the southwest corner of the square.  One of the uses of the building was a school in the very early days.  Later, the building would become the Roehm Shoe Store for almost 100 years.

Coincidentally, in 1865 William Roehm arrived in Washington and opened his first shoe store at another location on the square.  He would move into his more recognizable location a few years later.

Gideon R.  Hornish opened a store at the corner of Main and Zinser in 1865.  The large structure also housed other businesses over the years.
